Name
Jeff's first memorable line. In Jeff's attempt to open up the lockers with the first key given by Maxwell Labs, he gives the response, "this key doesn't work". Tony didn't understand what he meant at first, asking him "What?". Jeff says again, "this key doesn't work". This happens a few more times, and happens again even later when Maxwell asks what was wrong with the key.
Synopsis
The story begins as Ness regains consciousness after being attacked by the zombies that were awaiting him in the mysterious woman's room. Ness and Paula then examines the situation. They conclude that they are locked up into an unknown area in Threed and Paula suggests that their only option is to call someone by telepathy for help. Despite the two arguing on how to proceed with the call, someone answers. The boy presents himself as Jeff and is a tad freaked out about hearing voices in his head. After Paula is done explaining the situation, Jeff decides to head out to help them.
The story's focus then goes in the town of Winters in the north of Eagleland. In the middle of the night, Jeff attempts to sneak out but wakes up his roommate, Tony. Tony agrees to help Jeff sneak out of Snow Wood Boarding School. They meet up with Maxwell Labs to ask him about the locker room's master key. After the two realize that the key is bent and cannot open the lockers, Maxwell comes to them and gives Jeff the Bad Key Machine. After retrieving the stuff from the lockers, Jeff and Tony head outside. As they notice the closed gate, Tony allows Jeff to climb over him to pass above the fence. Then, as Tony tells his long goodbyes to Jeff, Jeff walks away from the school before Tony is done.
Jeff then stops by the nearby drugstore. A lady inside the store offers him a pack of bubble gum for a dollar, which he has. After receiving the pack, he is told he also gains the monkey as well. Jeff reluctantly takes the monkey along, not really sure why he would need a monkey. They then start walking south until Jeff spots a camp near the lake.
