Synopsis
Ness, Paula and Jeff leave the Runaway Five's show, wondering what to do next. Jeff tells them they have to go to the desert as he has the Player's Guide. Once outside, they debate about how to reach the desert. Ness then brings out Skip Sandwiches which they use to run back to the desert. Once at the desert, they notice a huge hole has been digged into the desert's ground, leading to a cave. They meet up with Gerardo Montague once inside. He explains them that there are 5 moles that prevent him to resume digging. They agree to help out getting rid of the moles and find them further in the cave. The moles then ask them if they can help them out determine which of the moles is the 3rd strongest of the group. The Chosen Three start battling Lenny and then Leroy. As the main mole points Jimbo as the next one, Jimbo throws the towel. As the main mole and Jimbo argues about it and then talk about their uncle Mondo and his playthrough of Final Fantasy X, Jeff loses patience and blasts them all with a Bottle Rocket. Gerardo then thanks them and promises to bring them the result soon.
A few seconds after, he catches up with them with his contruction vehicle to give them a diamond he tripped on at the entrance of the mine. After debating what to use the diamond for, Paula concludes they should trade it to Trisha for the Runaway Five's freedom. As they visit her at the Topolla Theater, they offer the diamond for them. Trisha has a lot of difficulties deciding but as she debates over it, she noticed they left to tell the Runaway Five were free to go. As the band thanks them again, they take off, telling they hope to be able to pay them back.
They then decide to go to the Fourside Department Store. Paula then suggests Ness to buy a new baseball bat but Ness finds the prices are too expensive. Jeff then suggests him to call his dad. Ness reluctantly takes the phone and calls him. Despite Ness' attempts to converse with him, Ness' father completely ignores him as he recites his usual speech in a robotic tone. As the call ends, Ness explains his group they have enough for a complete restock to which Paula calls the shopping spree. At that moment, Barenaked Ladies's Shopping is starting to play for a few seconds until a fade out. As the focus goes back on the trio, they are about to leave the Department Store when the lights goes out.
A creepy voice at the intercom then calls Ness, saying to come pick up Paula. Ness and Jeff notice Paula got kidnapped in the confusion. Jeff is in favor of just leaving but Ness relutanctly goes for saving Paula, saying they have to since she's currently in possession of the Sound Stone. They fight their way through to the top floor until they reach the manager's office. They then battle with the Department Store Spook. Defeated, the Department Store Spook explains in his dying breath that they won't get Paula back as she is already gone. Having no lead, the two then head back outside.
Looking around town, Ness finds a Café and wants something to drink. Despite Jeff explaining him Cafés only sells coffee, Ness says they maybe have a Pepsi vending machine. The Pepsi commercial starts playing but Jeff puts a stop to it, saying they're not doing that. As Ness mistakes the jukebox for a vending machine, the barmaid is about to expel them. However, they then hear a huge noise from outside. They go check and find a crowd around someone on the ground in the alley. One guy offers them access to the man if they give him something which they then give him a stick. The man on the ground reveals himself to be Everdred. He explains how he stole the Mani Mani Statue from Carpainter and tried to sell it in Fourside. Mayor Monotoli then tricked him into getting the statue and sent his bodyguards to silence him. Everdred then explains Ness that he has to check behind the counter of Jackie's Café. He then realizes Ness didn't paid attention because of a butterfly but Jeff seems to have taken note of it, despite just mentioning only that "the background music is different". Everdred then proceeds with his farewells and leave. Jeff then tells Ness that they should check the counter and as they do, they get transported to Moonside.
