Name

The title is a reference to Randy Lilley (or Carparama)'s play, "Fourside are Bawesome". Episode two of the play aired directly before FaB on the February 8th, 2008 broadcast of DJ Not-A-DJ's show. Randy Lilley makes an appearance in this episode as Monotoli. It's spoken by Monotoli before the battle with the Mani Mani.

Synopsis

As the two arrive in Moonside, they are greeted by people speaking the Moonsider way. As they leave the Café, they notice everything is pitch black with neon lights all around. They then notice a Dali's Clock and runs as it is about to attack them. As they walk around, they ask someone for directions to get back to Fourside but only receive a weird answer. As they go on, japanese and german sentences can be heard. They then spot someone looking like Paula but as they find out she's not Paula, she teleports them away. They are teleported in front of what seems to be the Fourside Museum. They go in and find someone who makes puns with bone. When Jeff loses his patience with the puns, the man teleports them away. As they reappear, the two talks about if teleportation is even possible. Jeff then remarks, using the moonside speaking way, that even a monkey could do it. Ness then asks Jeff to do a monkey impression. Jeff says no when he meant yes, ending up doing it. Ness then proceeds with his own impersonation to Jeff's dismay. As they continue looking around, they meet up with the sailor man. He prevents them to go any further because they are not with a man that has connected eyebrows and a gold tooth even though Jeff had connected eyebrows. They then meet up with another man, asking if he could sharpen them. Ness answers yes and the man, dissapointed, teleports them into a room.

Jeff then asks why everyone who teleported them mentioned "Hello, and Good-bye!". As Ness shrugs, the Beatles' song, Hello Goodbye, is played immediatly, pointing out Shigesato Itoi's references to the Beatles in his game. As the song is abruptly ending, Jeff tells to not pause the song to which Ness doesn't understand. They meet up with an invisible man that has connected eyebrows and a gold tooth while Jeff is still talking about the song. After being teleported by the Mr. T teleport guy, they reach the sailor which goes with the invisible man for some coffee and doughnuts. Ness and Jeff proceed through the opened path and encounters Monotoli. As he runs away, they spot the Mani Mani Statue. Ness tries to remember when he saw it in Lier X. Agerate's hole under his house but remembers the wrong part before he gets it right. Jeff then notices the statue is about to fight them but in a last effort, he starts yelling at Ness to play the song. As the Mani Mani Statue engages them, Ness is in shock that Jeff actually yelled at him that he doesn't even make a move, forcing Jeff to destroy it himself with a Bottle Rocket. As the statue shatters, the illusion vanish and they realize they were in the backroom of Jackie's Café all along.

As the narrator makes his closing comment, Jeff barges in and threatens the narrator that he will shoot him if he doesn't play the song to which the narrator explains they have ran out of time. Jeff then finally gives up.

Earthbound References

  • Jeff tries to explain that teleportation is not possible in a Moonside speaking way. It turns out that it would be "easy enough a monkey could do it". This is a reference that, later in the game, Ness learns PSI Teleport α from a monkey from Talah Rama's cave.

Cultural References

  • The title is a reference to Randy Lilley (or Carparama)'s play, "Fourside are Bawesome" in a Moonside speaking way.
  • The song Hello Goodbye is a song of the Beatles. It is one among many references that Shigesato Itoi had put inside Earthbound.
  • When Ness mentions to Jeff that "There is no song... nor spoon", it is in fact a reference to the Matrix as the sentence was "There is no spoon".
  • The 4th teleport man had a Mr. T sprite in Earthbound. Thus Mr. T's "Shut up, foo!" was used to voice him.

Paulas are Bamazing

Because of his decreased role in this and the following episodes, cast member Martin Tovar started a spinoff of FaB, coined Paulas are Bamazing, which was the equivilant of a daytime talk show hosted by Paula herself where she would give ( usually terrible ) advice, and always closed the show with a song parody.

Notes

  • This is the first episode when Jeff raises his voice (if Ness didn't already make that clear).
  • In this episode, there is Japanese and German speech.
  • Since the episode happens in Moonside, the intro song and the song at the narrator's opening comment were altered versions of the usual ones. (See Egnarob Era Seibbof.)
