Name

One of the last lines of the episode has Ness stating that "our stories may be over, but we'll see how things turn out in 'Tree From My Youth'". "Tree From My Youth" is the official title of the upcoming MOTHER 3 radio play, and the episode title references that there will definitely be a radio play of MOTHER 3 in the future.

Synopsis

The episode begins with the title, followed by a new opening. The story returns on Ness' last line of the previous episode. After talking about their current state and experiences, they move onward to the final showdown. Ness discusses about his baseball bat and then the topic changes about Paula's mother being a robot. This makes Paula cry. Ness tries to cheer her up, but goes a little overboard. He still manages to cheer her up eventually and they proceed further. Poo then complains that he can't sing in his robot body. Ness then mentions he had a synthetizer program installed, but he had deleted it, much to Poo's dismay. As they cross the teleportation sphere, they encounter Trisha and Tommy, claiming they are the heroes of Earthbound. As they begin to argue about the matter, the whole group is ambushed by the Bionic Kraken. As Trisha is about to start battling with the Bionic Kraken, Tommy throws her into its mouth, stating that he is now evil. The Chosen Four then battle Tommy. Tommy uses the Relic Shards of the Eagleland Sages to, one by one, defeat the Chosen Four. Just when Tommy attempts to finish them off with the Ancient Dragon Sphere Emerald Necklace of Power, Jeff jumps in, stating Tommy is not in the Player's Guide. Realizing Jeff is right, Tommy disappears, and Paula says farewell to Trisha before moving on. As they arrive at Giygas' lair, they gather their courage and encounter Pokey.

As they engage Giygas, the Chosen Four start to realize how terrifying Giygas is. Ness inquires about the Devil's machine to learn that it is containing Giygas. After Pokey talks some smack to Ness, he tells Paula to use PSI Shield on the group. As Giygas attacks, Paula tries to reinforce the shield. Pokey continues to spite Ness, making Ness orders Jeff to attack Pokey with his Multi-Bottle Rockets. Pokey then attacks Poo, terrifying the others. Jeff attempts to fix Poo while Ness attacks. Once Poo is fixed, Jeff takes the offensive but Pokey turns off the Devil's machine, revealing Giygas' true form.

Giygas reveals himself to be the narrator. He then reveals that he is indeed the evil fobby from Paula's past. As he explains about his plans to get her away from Al Gore, he also adds how Ness taking Paula away messed up his plan. Giygas now reveals that he doesn't need Paula anymore and will destroy them all. The Chosen Four, however, are ready to battle him. Ness with his sense of duty, Paula with her feelings for revenge, Jeff with his ideals of superheroes and Poo with his eternal positive attitude. As Giygas attacks, Ness is unaffected by the attack but his friends take heavy damage. They realize that his Franklin Badge is preventing him to take as much damage. As Jeff goes down, Ness takes the healing role while Poo uses PSI Starstorm Ω. Despite not affecting Giygas, it gave Ness enough time to revive Jeff. Ness then asks Paula to do whatever she can. She tries a new technique, PSI Freeze Ω x2, but it doesn't seem to be enough. Pokey then comes back to tease the group. He quickly picks on Jeff, who has no PSI power, but the others come to his defense. Pokey then tells them that there is no one who can help them now, as Giygas has entered into a frenzy.

As things take a turn for the worse, Paula looks to Ness for guidance. Ness thinks about the situation when he notices Paula is smoking, and tells her to throw her cigarette away. Out of options, he mentions the concept of prayer, which triggers an idea from Paula, who uses her Pray ability to call for help from their friends. As Dr. Andonuts and Mr. Saturns pray for them, Giygas takes heavy damage but counters, taking Poo down. Paula keeps praying, reaching Trisha as she expresses her feelings to Paula and Ness, damaging Giygas some more. Paula keeps praying and reaches Poo's fangirls, praying for their prince despite his current death. The prayers revived Poo as well as damaging Giygas. Giygas then attempts to attack as Ness complains about how the fights were so easy until then. Jeff then explains that since then, it was just Shaq Fu sound effects. Paula keeps praying, reaching Tony and all of Jeff's schoolmates, damaging Giygas again. As Paula attempts to reach Ness' father, she has to stop because she needs to ask Ness' last name which even he ignores. She proceeds with her prayer and Ness' father cheers up to his son, damaging Giygas again while giving strength to Ness. Giygas begins to lose it. Poo then realize that Ness has water and that he can use it so restore his PP to get a shield back up. Paula tries to pray but does not know who to pray. They reaches Ninten, Loid and Ana, complaining about reading a script. Ninten and Loid gives up and Ana starts praying for the Chosen Four. This damages Giygas further, making his next counter attack shatter the shield. Paula goes for another prayer, calling to anyone. The prayer reaches Ness' family, worrying about him and starts praying while preventing Tracy to mention about King's fate. Giygas receives more damage but counters and hits everyone but Paula to mortal damage. As Jeff and Poo go down, Ness cheers Paula up as he tries to hang on for his life. Being out of ideas, she calls to anyone. However, the prayer fails as it gets swallowed by the void. Ness is on his last moment and Paula is losing all courage as he passes on. She is about to give up but prays one last time. As she believes it's all over, a prayer from her real father comes through the void. As his father cheers her up, Paula's prayers manage to damage Giygas again, putting an end to the Cosmic Destroyer once and for all. Her father rejoices with her one last time before he disappears along with Giygas.

The war against Giygas is over. The Chosen Four's spirits then returns to their human bodies in the present. As they wake up, they are greeted by Dr. Andonuts and the other workers. Ness, however, is still not moving. As his friends worries about him, he reveals that he was faking it, angering them. As they realize it's finally over, they think about how they have been together for so long and how much they enjoy each other's company. Poo then reveals that for all this time, he wasn't using his real voice in order to practice for his future career and decides to reveal his real voice to them. He then leaves using his fake voice with PSI Farewell, a renamed version of teleport. Jeff decides to stay with his father and when he mentions with the possibility that Paula and Ness might be together one day, they stop him. Jeff then says goodbye and leaves to speak with his father. As Ness and Paula remains, Ness proposes Paula a cab but she wants him to walk her home. Before they do so, they check the presents that landed from the sky. As Ness reads the first letter from her mother, he stops as he gets bored. The second letter is for Paula from Trisha's little brother explaining how Paula's father disappeared and that her mother stopped moving. He then starts wondering what happened to his sister Trisha. The final letter is from Patrick Tony Andonuts for Jeff. He tells that he is now in Alabama and that he cannot wait until Jeff joins him and before it goes more awkward, Ness stops reading and decides to protect Jeff by not giving him the letter. Ness then offers to stop to Burger King but Paula wants McDonald's. As Ness is about to teleport, Paula reminds him of her problem of not being able to teleport but Ness then admits he lied all along and teaches her how to teleport properly. As she finally manages to teleport to Onett, she feels so happy about it but is angry about Ness hiding it all along. From there, they arrive in Burger King (which has the Magicant music) and finds out Frank is now working there. As Frank inquires about Ness and Paula, Ness dismisses the thought of the two being together and orders Cini-Minis. As they enjoy them, Trisha comes out of nowhere. Paula regains her usual attitude toward Trisha as she sees her. As Trisha asks her about their adventures, Paula stops her, telling her that they need to start over with their friendship. With Ness' encouragement, she finally befriends Trisha. Ness and Paula then leave while Paula leaves her last Cini-Mini to Trisha and teleport to Twoson. As they arrive, Ness admits to Paula that he is impressed about how she acted with Trisha. She then reveals that she added poison to the icing of the Cini-Mini to Ness' horror. She then admits to Ness how he had changed but Ness replies that Paula was the real hero in the end as she was the one to defeat Giygas. Paula then mentions the moment at the end when she was praying with her dad until his dad actually shows up behind them. As he reunites with Paula, he explains he managed to find a hospital after being left for dead and saved himself. He then proceeded to search for Paula but was never able to find her and finally gave up. As she prayed during the final battle, his renewed determination brought him back into searching and thanks to the Internet, found her MySpace page. As Paula's father is about to reveal Paula's mother, Ness decides to leave to prevent the revelation of an important matter about a main character. As Ness and Paula share their last words, Ness ends up making one last crack but teleports back home before Paula has a chance to get back at him. As he returns home, he finds out he has caught a cold. Once back inside his home, her mother greets him as she was so worrying about him. Tracy then greets Ness and asks about his adventures but doesn't seem to care at all and claims that she is still the smarter one between the two. As Ness asks his mom for support, she fakes not hearing them. She then shows Ness the photo album from the Photoman. Ness starts watching the album and sees a dog he doesn't know. His family then tell him that this is Fido and they then try to make him believe that they had him all along instead of King.

The ending music starts and every actor starts presenting the characters they played, including the minor characters and guest stars. As they scroll down the list, Bill Eager comes in, revealing that he was in fact the voice of Master Barf. The credits were followed by the last song in the show, With Fobbies and Friends, a duet version of "Smiles and Tears" sung by cast members Martin Tovar and Benjamin Carignan.

After the ending music, the scene shifts back at night with someone knocking at the door of Ness' house. Ness walks down, reminding Tracy he still hates her and opens it. It's Picky this time bringing a letter. He then gives it to Ness saying it's from Pokey, challenging Ness to get him. However, Ness then concludes that even though their story might be over, no one knows what will happen in "Tree From My Youth".

Cultural References

  • The music that plays during the fight with Tommy is the same battle theme that plays when fighting the optional boss "Culex" in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars", which itself is a version of the battle theme from "Final Fantasy IV". This is a nod to the fact that Tommy isn't part of the Earthbound universe, just like Culex is not part of the Mario universe. There were also some other games' sound effects, such as Chrono Trigger's Lavos' yell.
  • Jeff's statement "I want a dang burrito, dang it!" is a reference to Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness.
  • Ninten's statement "I'm my own grandpa" is a reference to Futurama.

Notes

  • The ending of the episode was re-written after Ben didn't agree with it, claiming it was too 'dark'. In the original script, Tracy tells Ness she has a surprise for him. Tracy brings out King, which Ness gets excited about until he realizes the dog isn't moving. Ness's Mom and Tracy continue to try and persuade Ness that this is 'his puppy' but eventually Ness says 'you took him to a taxidermist.' The episode ends with Tracy saying 'Screw you, Ness' and Ness responding with 'How about I take this baseball bat and shove it up your--'.
  • Stephen Georg wrote over 100 pages of this script by himself. The decision to bring back Paula's Old Father as the 'player' was that of Chaz, and was written by Benjamin, however.
  • This episode was prerecorded, and took Benjamin Carignan over 20 hours of work to prepare. The episode's mp3 was ready literally minutes before the show was scheduled to air.
  • Unlike how Earthbound ended, Paula confesses her feelings for Ness by kissing him. Despite this, she also accepts that the two of them aren't meant to be together.
  • "I'm into seeds." "Yeah yeah, I know, you're into seeds. And Jeff is into Cake." - a reference to Ness and Jeff's voice actors and their real life sweethearts, white sesame seed and Magic Cake Woman. (Since then, Jeff and Magic Cake Woman have split up, as have their real-life counterparts.)
